The Pittsburgh Pirates have a new manager in Clint Hurdle who hopes to right the ship after the team endured the major league’s worst record last season by going 57-105. Though spring training doesn’t usually start until the second week of February, Mr. Hurdle, who was the hitting instructor last season for the Texas Rangers and the skipper of the Colorado Rockies for the previous 7 years, decided to jump the gun and hold a mini camp in mid January to get to know his new players.
The general feel of the camp that I picked up on was of the light variety, with lot’s of ribbing and joking between the players and their new manager and a perceived sense of camaraderie, which apparently is a far cry from their last few seasons. Hopefully this attitude can carry into the new season and help Hurdle and his staff turn the franchise around and back into the green, as it were.
